M: Would you like to play tennis this afternoon?
W: Sorry. I have to take a make-up test. I can't put it off any longer.

make-up: missed; done later
put off: postpone

W: My superviser told me I have manegerial skills.
M: What a compliment!

a compliment is an expression of praise or admiration, which is flattering or pleasing.

M: All I do is study Chemistry, and I still manageged to flunk the first two quzzes.
W: Don't lose heart. The first two chapters are the hardest.

flunk: to fail an exam, a test or a course
lose heart: feel discouraged

W: I just heard your hiking club's trip to Mount Shasta fell through.
M: Yeah, and I was really looking forward to streaching my legs.

fall through: faill to happen
streach one's legs: walk; exercise

M: I had to miss class, so Tanya let me borrow her notes. Can you help me to figure out what this says?
W: I could if her handwriting were legible.

legible: clear enough to read

W: I talked to Lisa again today, and it didn't go well.
M: What do you mean?
W: When I tried to give her advice about her boyfriend, she told me to mind my own business. I was only trying to help.
M: Maybe you can help by taking Lisa's advice.

mind one's own business: not interfere in the personal matters of other people
